Future of Generic Drugs in India - JAN AUSHADHI KENDRA

The future of generic drugs in India.

According to a prescription guideline released by NMC recently,
Doctors should write generic, non-proprietary pharmacological names only.

The penalty for violating the law can range from an advisory or warning to a 30-day suspension of your license.
The guidelines state that doctors should encourage patients to purchase drugs from Jan Aushadhi kendras and other generic pharmacy outlets.

JAN AUSHADHI KENDRA:

Let's understand first what is Jan Aushadhi Kendra. They are pharmacy centres that provide people with generic medicines at affordable prices.
Now we have discussed generic drugs in our previous blocks. For example, let's say the name.
Crocin or Dolo are the brand names of paracetamol, which is a generic drug. Branded drugs are more expensive than generic drugs.

Presenting the Union budget for the financial year 2020-2021.
Finance Minister Nirmala Seetharaman announced a proposal to expand government-run Jan Aushadhi kendras in all districts of India.

Currently. More than 700 Jan Aushadhi kendras are operational in districts of India.
NMC says hospitals and local pharmacies should stock generic drugs.
To provide medicines at a lower price range with decent quality, the PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra scheme began in 2021.

The government also started a franchise program to start Jan Aushadhi kendras in all districts.

Expansion of Jan Aushadhi centres won't make a difference unless it's accompanied by strong regulations requiring doctors in private practice to prescribe generics.

Our Jan Aushadhi Kendra revenue recently crossed 100 crores for the first time. The government wants to increase the number of shops by 10,000 by March 2024. There are currently 8735 shops in 739 districts.

Under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, PMBI Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices, the Bureau of India operates these stores.
2014 was the year in which annual turnover was 8 crores and in 2022 it is more than 100 crores. This is a journey of 8 years.
